Philip E. Covert

Philip E. Covert

Philip E. Covert, age 69, of Quincy, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 in his home. He was born on April 15, 1951 in Macomb, Illinois, the son of Gaylord and Beatrice (Woolridge) Covert. He had been previously married to Donna Prophater for 20 years and from that union were born 2 children.

Mr. Covert was a 1969 graduate of LaHarpe High School, in LaHarpe, Illinois. In 1971, he earned his Electronics Technician diploma from the United Electronics Institute in Louisville, KY. For over 20 years he had been employed as an electronics technician at Harris Broadcast.

Phil was a dedicated ham radio operator since his youth, holding the license of Amateur Extra (the highest license class awarded by the Federal Communications Commission), with his call sign of k9ts. He was sincerely passionate about his ham radio hobby & his fellow operators.

He enjoyed spending time just sitting outdoors while listening to his scanner, having drinks with good friends, and enjoying a good meal with his daughter, his son, & his grandchildren. For many years, Phil was an avid BMW motorcyclist, often traveling to rallies across the country. A stickler for motorcycle safety, he spent several years teaching the local motorcycle safety course at both the mall and at the airport. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He was quiet, stubborn, kind-hearted, generous, intelligent, gentle, and loving. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.

Philip is survived by his children: Christina Covert (Jeffrey Case) of Quincy and Philip Alexander Covert of Nashville, TN;

Grandsons: Jacob Blaine Covert of Maywood, MO and Chayton Tyler Covert of Quincy;

Great-Grandchildren: Sylas Covert, Alaska Covert, Eileithyia Covert, and Atticus Covert;
and Sister: Carol Edmunds (Dick) of Dallas City, IL. Along with many beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents.

The family appreciates the wonderful staff at The Blessing Cancer Center and extends their sincere gratitude to the amazing ladies at Blessing Hospice with particular appreciation to Philip's hospice RN, Keaton. Your kindness and care are boundless.

Cremation rites have been accorded to Philip. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic memorial services will be private. Memorials may be made to the family to help with expenses in the care of Christina Covert. The Duker and Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. www.dukerandhaugh.com.

Our kids share much of their dad both in looks and characteristics and so Gene you will live through them in the most loving way. Hearts are broken that through this time many can’t be there and it makes this whole thing that much more difficult, but my love is there for my kids as well as for Gene and the rest of the family.
