Mrs. Jean V. Peters

Mrs. Jean V. Peters

Jean Virginia (Hartzell) Peters, age 81, of Quincy, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2019. She was born on January 17, 1938, in Quincy to Winthrop and Bertha (Stock) Hartzell. On February 17, 1962, she married Lloyd W. Peters, her husband of fifty-seven years, at the former St. Mary Catholic Church in Quincy.

Jean was a lifelong resident of Quincy, Illinois, a devout Catholic, and member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In 1956, she graduated from Quincy High School. Jean thought the world of her family and could often be found in attendance at her children's and grandchildren's various sporting events and recitals. As evidenced by her twenty-year-old geranium plant, she was an exceptionally skilled gardener, providing her family with plenty of delicious fruits and vegetables every summer. Jean also loved watching the cardinals, both the baseball team in St. Louis and the red birds, as well as the numerous hummingbirds and butterflies that would flock to her beautiful flowers.

In addition to her husband Lloyd, she is survived by her daughters, Tammy (Christopher) Niemann and Cindy Peters, all of Quincy, and her four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Christopher) Dreste of St. Louis, MO, Adam Niemann, M.D., and Eric Niemann, both of Chicago, IL, and Caroline Niemann of Quincy. Three sisters, Lillian Burton of Quincy, Edith Frazier of Ursa, IL, and her twin Jane McSparren of Hannibal, MO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, also survive her.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Thelma Bentley and Dorothy Schnellbacher, and brother, Walter Hartzell.

Services: Visitation on Friday, March 1, 2019, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Quincy with Reverend Chris Comerford presiding. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Quincy Notre Dame Foundation or the American Heart Association.
