Barbara Ann Kuhn

Barbara Ann Kuhn, age 77 of Mendon, died on Saturday, February 5, 2022 in Springfield, IL. She was born on June 20, 1944 in Quincy, the daughter of Walter and Mildred (Zanger) Tournear. She married Thomas Kuhn on November 24, 1962 in St. Brigid Catholic Church in Liberty. He preceded her in death on August 5, 2011.

Barb was a longtime member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon. She volunteered for nearly 60 years baking turkeys for the St. Edwards Turkey Dinner. She was also a member of the Ladies of St. Francis. Barb was devoted to her religion and was a proud and continuous supporter of Catholic Education. She was overjoyed to have been a part of and a witness to her sons' priestly ordinations. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. She also liked having coffee with her friends after daily Mass and having lunch with 6 of her old school friends. She exhibited baked goods at the Adams County Fair, with great success. She was the 'Cookie Jar' winner many years at the fair. She also loved watching the family showing their Holstein cattle and rabbits at the fair, a 70 year old tradition. Barb loved flower gardening and fruit trees. She liked to feed and watch the birds, especially the redbirds and hummingbirds. Barb was a very creative writer, she wrote many notes and cards to others offering her thoughts and support. Barb was always interested in all of the daily activities of her family and the happenings on the dairy farm. She was proud to talk about her historical home that was part of the Underground Railroad and decorated it for the different seasons and holidays. Most recently she was excited to pray with Bishop Thomas John Paprocki while she was in the hospital.

Survivors include her eight children: Myra Kuhn of Quincy, Father Melvin Kuhn of Flandreau, SD, Marvin Kuhn and Myron Kuhn both of Mendon, Anaise (Derek) England of Edina, MO, R. Robert Kuhn of Springfield, IL and Matthew T. Kuhn of Mendon and Father Aaron Kuhn of Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Three grandsons, Thomas (Mariah) England, Daniel (Megan) England and John England and a brother James Tournear. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

In addition to her husband, Barb was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother Gerald Tournear.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 10:30 Am in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 11:00 AM in St. Peter Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday afternoon from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM with a Rosary to be prayed at the end of the time of visitation in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Grade School in Mt. Sterling, IL; the Knights of Columbus TV Mass for Shut-Ins; the Tom and Barb Kuhn Scholarship at Quincy Notre Dame or for Masses to be said in the memory of Tom and Barb Kuhn. The Duker & Haugh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

We have known Barb our whole lives. She always set the example of trusting in the Lord even in times of trouble and trials. She truly exemplified the Blessed Virgin's words, "Be it done unto me according to Your will. " Our prayers are with all you children. As you face these earthly days without her. May God grant you peace.

I was so sorry to hear of Barb's passing. She was such a fun person. I always enjoyed the stories she submitted to the Liberty Bee about the family. I especially enjoyed the latest one about Nicholas (the bird). Her sense of humor would come through on her stories. You could tell she was so proud of her family. Both Aunt Barb and Uncle Tom were good people, and I always enjoyed being around them and listening to their stories. She will be missed. Will be thinking of everyone and praying you all get through this.

We are very sorry to hear that Barbara Kuhn has passed. My brother Allen Jochem, and I became friends with her in 2011 when our Mom, Marian Jochem, became roommates with Barb's mom, Millie Tournear, at St. Vincent's Home. Both Barb and Millie were very good to our Mom and to us, and we had lots of laughs and good conversations over the years our moms shared the same room. Blessings upon Barb and Millie and the entire Kuhn Family. We are so sorry for your loss. We send you our love from Sharon and Allen here on earth, and Marian Jochem now in heaven.
