Helen Louise Dickens

Helen Louise Dickens, age 88, of Quincy, died on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at the Illinois Veteran's Home. Helen was born on September 1, 1929 in Morgan County, IL, the daughter of William Sherman and Bessie May (Miller) McDannald. She married Thomas Dickens on June 6, 1947 at Neelyville Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on July 10, 2007.

Helen was a homemaker, secretary and worked many years along side her husband and their construction company, Dickens Electric and Construction until his retirement in 1988. Helen loved the Lord, her family and her family in Christ. She never knew a stranger, for everyone was "Beloved" to her. Helen famously always answered any phone call "Jesus loves you and I love you too". She was known to many people in the community as "Momma Helen".

She was involved in the Residents Encounter Christ Prison Ministry, Cursillo, and Walk to Emmaus. Helen lived at the Illnois Veteran's Home in Quincy for 17 years. She was active at the IVH including leading many Bible studies, volunteering at the Welcome Corner and assisting with library services. She was a Sunset Lady from 2001-2015.

Helen is survived by her children: Daniel Dickens of Quincy and Violet Hutton of Bluffs; three grandchildren, Amanda Hutton of Bluffs, Carrie Hutton of Jacksonville and Dawn (Daryl) Morgan of Springfield; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, John Robert Miller and sisters, Violet McDannald, Betty Bonds and Virginia Peters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 10:00 AM in the All Faith's Chapel at the Illinois Veterans Home. Interment will be in Sunset Cemetery immediately following services. Visitation will be held prior to funeral services starting at 8:30 AM at the All Faith's Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Illinois Veterans Home.

If anyone goes to heaven, it will be Helen. She was always cheerful and willing to help with any request. She was one of our very favorite residents at the Veterans Home. She is with the good Lord now and deserves her eternal reward! We will miss her.
