Maureen C. Hess

Maureen Catherine Hess, age 75, of 910 Eastate Dr., died on Thursday, October 1, 2015 in her home. She was born on November 23, 1939 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Joseph and Genevieve (Marshall) Vaughan. She is survived by her husband, Gary Hess, whom she married on June 9, 1956.

Maureen attended Notre Dame High School in Quincy. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Maureen was a talented artist and calligrapher. She greatly enjoyed working with ceramics over the years and gifted many of her pieces. Maureen was a wonderful conversationalist and storyteller and especially enjoyed reciting and singing memorized poems and songs to her children, grandchildren and friends. She amazed caretakers in later years with her ability to still do those things.

Maureen was the eldest of 14 children and treasured her parents and siblings and their catholic faith and Irish heritage, which she continued to share with her family throughout her life. Everyone who met Maureen instantly shared a bond, admiration and love for this remarkably lovely and precious woman. She was a constant source of support, acceptance, hope and love for her growing family over the years.

Maureen's family would especially like to thank her caretakers of the last two years at Good Samaritan Home, Unity Point Hospice and Community Care.

In addition to her most loyal husband and love of her life, she is survived by:
THREE CHILDREN: Gail Costigan and her husband Lawrence of Quincy; Kevin Hess and his wife Ellen of Mt. Prospect, IL and Kirk Hess and his wife Sherry of Quincy.
ELEVEN GRANDCHILDREN: Colleen Johnson and her husband Patrick; Patrick Costigan and his spouse Abby Turner; Christopher Costigan and his wife Reagan; Lauren Maureen Patel and her husband Parth; Brian Hess; Brandon Hess; and Bridget Maureen Hess; David Hess and his wife Melissa; Shannon Slee and her husband Jordan; Eric Hess and Kaelyn Hess.
GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN: Aiden & Addison Johnson; Sunny Turner; Sawyer Costigan; Thomas & Matthew Hess; Desmond, Elliana and Alizah Slee.
SIBLINGS: Rita Miller and her husband Robert; John Vaughan and his wife Joyce; Annette Vaughan; James Vaughan and his wife Jean; Patrick Vaughan and his wife Donna; Katherine Ellwood and her husband Tim; David Vaughan; Jeannie DiDonato and her husband David; Thomas Vaughan and his wife Brenda; Michael Vaughan and his wife Kathy; Daniel Vaughan and his wife Marsha and Mark Vaughan and his wife Jennifer.
Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Joseph Vaughan.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 9:30 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 in St. Francis Catholic Church. Interment in Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Vaughan Legacy Builders Fund or to St. Francis Catholic Church. www.dukerandhaugh.com

I have had the pleasure of teaching Shannon Hess Slee as a Wuincy High student and also having her as a colleague. I now witness how she is the most wonderful mother to some amazing children. I ha e no doubt that this tremendous love of God and family is a result of learning from her parents and grandparents. What a wonderful woman she must have been!

Gary, Kirk, Sherry, & the entire Hess Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Although I only met her a couple of times, Mrs. Hess made a mark on my heart. She was one fine lady. I enjoyed reading her obituary. I told my girl they could use the part about the storytelling in my obituary.
It has been a very long haul for all of you and I know you will be lost for awhile. How well I remember Gary bringing Maureen to an Exchange Club event over 20 years ago in a wheel chair and how beautiful she looked. From the obituary, the beauty was inside as well as outside. May God give you strength, help you to focus on the wonderful gift of her life that he shared with you and give you peace and comfort in knowing she suffers no more.
