Mary E. Bailey

Mary Ella Bailey, 85, of Quincy, passed away peacefully at Sunset Home, surrounded by loved ones on April 27, 2018 at 12:20 p.m.

She was born on May 13, 1932, in Hannibal Mo. to the late Earl and Geneva (Walker) Green. She married Monroe G. Bailey on February 4, 1950. He preceded her in death on January 28, 1994. Mary is survived by five children to cherish her memory, Monroe G. (Anita) Bailey, Jr. of Canton, IL, Sheila (Rolland) Steele of Midway, FL, Carol Ruffin of Quincy, IL, Debra Bailey-Sprague of Cypress, TX, James (Ericka) Bailey of Chicago, IL, and one devoted step-daughter, Brenda (Thomas) Steele of St. Louis, MO; 20 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Mae Bolt and Mayna Shepherd, both of Peoria, IL; two sister in-laws, Dorothy Green of Peoria, IL and Gilberta Bailey of Quincy, IL; and many beloved nieces and nephews, other family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Earl, James, and Wilbur Green; sisters, Arnetta Smith, Mendill Farris, and Genevieve Farmer; her granddaughter, Tamara Steele and a great-grandson Chance Bailey.

Mary was a devoted wife, a homemaker and the family queen. She loved the Lord and she and Monroe raised their family to know, trust and serve their Savior Jesus Christ. Mary was a faithful member of the church serving as a Deaconess and Sunday School Teacher. She started a Christian women's group called Women of Compassion at Pilgrim Baptist Church. She worked with her daughter, Carol, with the Falling in Love with Jesus program at First Baptist Church. She was an avid reader, a fashion trendsetter, and a prolific cook, but it was the love of family that truly gave her life meaning and filled her with joy.

The Celebration of Life service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Friday evening, from 5-7 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and Saturday morning before the services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the United in Jesus Outreach Ministries, 700 East Oak Street, Suite 302, Canton, IL 61520.
