George J. "Buck" VonderHaar

George J. "Buck" VonderHaar, age 87, of Quincy, previously of 1201 Highland Lane, died on Monday, December 29, 2014 at 11:50 a.m. in Good Samaritan Home. He was born on December 12, 1927 at home in Quincy, a son of Lawrence & Anne (Jergensmeyer) VonderHaar. He married Jeanette Bocke on October 7, 1950 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Quincy. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2006.

Buck was a brick mason for many years, completing numerous projects in Adams County including Padua Hall at Quincy University, many projects at Blessing Hospital and Quincy High School. He also built and operated several Quincy area carwashes.

He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church and a former member of St. John the Baptist Church.

Buck was an avid fisherman and hunter for many years. He truly was an outdoorsman and spent a lot of time on his farm making improvements. Hereally enjoyed family gatherings and get-togethers at their old river camp, and then at the farm, and attending the many, many sporting events of the grand-children.

Buck also bowled for many years, and enjoyed the competition at the lanes with family and friends. He was a longtime member of the Elks Club, and a former member of the Brickmason's Local #1.

He is survived by his four children, Judy A. Gianfriddo and her husband Dr. Raymond J., James K. VonderHaar and his wife Debra H., Karen S. McFarland and Kurt J. VonderHaar and his wife Amy L., all of Quincy; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Dolieslager and her husband Erik of Quincy, Dr. Joseph Gianfriddo of Quincy, Cory VonderHaar and his wife Brandi of St. Louis, MO; Courtney VonderHaar and her fiancé, Kevin Benfield of Buffalo Grove, IL, Andrew & Alex VonderHaar all of Quincy, Amy McFarland and her fiancé Brad Klisares of Quincy, Dustin McFarland of Quincy, Katie McFarland of Glendale Heights, IL, Rachel & Kayla VonderHaar both of Quincy; three great grandchildren, Keira & Chase Dolieslager and Brooklyn VonderHaar.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his wife, Jeanette, and his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and a son-in-law, Mark McFarland.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church by Fr. Duc Pham, O.F.M. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Church or the Good Samaritan Home for the Foose Center. www.dukerandhaugh.com
