Charles F. "Charlie" Grawe

Charles F. “Charlie” Grawe, age 90, of 2401 Longlett Dr., died on Sunday, January 25, 2009, in St. Vincent Home. He was born on May 5, 1918 in Quincy, the son of Clement & Elizabeth (Lugering) Grawe. He married Henrietta F. Helbig on July 5, 1943 in St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy. She preceded him in death on March 25, 2006. Charlie was an insurance agent for Prudential from 1948 until 1980. Charlie was a graduate of St. Francis Grade School, Quincy College Academy and Gem City Business College. Charlie served in the Illinois National Guard.

Charlie was a Past President of the Quincy Noon Optimist’s Club, a member of the Elks, the Mart Heinen Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Secular Franciscans and the Quincy Clique Club. Charlie was a past board member of Christian Brothers High School, St. Francis Solanus School, the Quincy Catholic Charities and the Mill Creek Water District.

Charlie had a great love of music being a member of the Quincy College Academy and the Quincy College Concert Bands. He was a member of the St. Francis Glee Club and the Choirs at St. Francis and St. Dominic parishes.

An avid sports fan and bowler, Charlie was a season ticket holder at Quincy University and followed his children and grandchildren’s sports activities as well as enjoying his membership at Cedar Crest Country Club for many years honing his golf skills leading to a hole in one at age 88.

Charlie is survived by:
FOUR SONS: Jay Grawe and his wife Nan of Quincy; Jack Grawe and his wife Kerri of Davidson, NC; Don Grawe and his wife Robin of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Chuck Grawe and his wife Mayra of Houston TX.
13 GRANDCHILDREN: Jeff Grawe, Tony Grawe and his wife Sarah, and Jim Grawe; David Grawe and his wife Angie; Ben Grawe and his wife Katie; Meghan Monahan; Scott Grawe and his wife Michelle; Dan Grawe and his wife J.R.; Doug Grawe; Eric Grawe; Megan Hampshire; Jared and Mia Grawe.
12 Great-Grandchildren
& numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his wife, Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, a son Charles F. Grawe, Jr. in infancy; four brothers: Wilfred, Elmer, Gilbert and Alvin Grawe and 3 Sisters: Hilda Blickhan, Zeta Venvertloh and Betty Venvertloh.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 9:30 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home and at 10:00 in St. Francis Catholic Church, by the Rev. Kurt Hartrich, O.F.M.. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 4-7 PM with a Secular Franciscan and Parish Wake Service at 5:30 PM. Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame or to St. Francis Catholic Church.
